A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in national works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
