European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
