Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
