Seven accused members of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
